From gold rush to urban renewal; Docklands.In the early 1850s, during the gold rush and accompanying mass migration, the growing need for wharfing facilities resulted in the creation of Victoria Dock (now Victoria Harbour) in Docklands. Growth continued well into the 1930s, but it wasn’t until the 1960s that huge containers replaced bales and crates formerly used to transport goods. Docklands’ sheds and wharves were not designed to accommodate the containers and soon Docklands ceased being Melbourne’s bustling hub of economic and maritime activity. In 1991, the renewal of Docklands began with the establishment of the Docklands Authority (now VicUrban) and was charged with the challenge of transforming a disused port and rail area into the modern waterfront urban oasis that it has become today.
